The film "Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano" was shot by Nikita Mikhalkov in 1976 based on several plays by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. This is one of the first works of the director, but, like subsequent ones, it raises serious problems of the individual and social life of a person.
In many ways, the film, following Chekhov's plays, leaves questions open, prompting the viewer to find answers to them himself. The hostess "tolerates" the guests. She has long been in debt and, making a choice between honor and property, she chooses an estate. She doesn't have friends, but useful connections. A loving Semyon Porfirevich is spinning around her, promising content for her favor. But Anna Petrovna herself has a secret connection with the married Platonov.
Love drama - passion visual vector
Platonov is torn between three women: his wife, already a tired mistress - the mistress of the estate, with whom he contacted, most likely out of boredom, and his past and first love Sophia, Serge's wife. They accidentally collide at a Voinitseva party. Like any man with an anal vector, the first love is the most significant for him, and the feeling still has not died, and at a sudden meeting only flared up with renewed vigor. Two spectators - Misha and Sophia - have been looking for opportunities to retire all night in order to talk and understand what an absurd accident threw them up suddenly then, seven years ago, when a young girl got on a train to leave for two days, but never came back. Systematically, their tragedy is understandable, the motives of their actions are clearly visible. Naturally, they fit together: both sensual, capable of creating a crazy emotional connection. Not all members of the nobility can adapt, despite the fact that they are smart, educated. The owners of the anal vector are pathologically incapable of changing, acting. For them, everything new is stress, and the preservation of traditions is a priority.
The lack of realization of the visual vector makes them spend time in empty talk about charity, love and help to the common people, narcissism and entertainment. Any reference to a serious topic, the posing of acute questions is immediately ridiculed, turned into a joke, into a farce. How harmful it is for the viewer: for some time "swaying" in exaltation, in laughter, he then inevitably falls to the very bottom of his emotional amplitude - into melancholy and insensibility.
Throughout the film, we see the emotional swing of the characters. The crying doctor Triletsky tells us about his "hard" life. Not because he works a lot and gets tired (on the contrary, he refuses to help Gorokhov's sick wife, citing busyness - entertainment and wine await him), but because he does not like his job, does not feel a person, does not feel the need to help someone. We observe here an atrophy of the visual meaning of life, which consists precisely in sympathy for one's neighbor, in a desire to help and support. In fact, the profession of a doctor is one of the best types of realization of visual properties, provided that a person is capable of it, will be sensually involved in work with people.
A common thread throughout the film is the throwing of the school teacher Mikhail Vasilyevich Platonov. So he laughs and “turns on” the whole society, devaluing everything he just said about the meaning of life. But, at the peak of the inner dramatization of what is happening, in the middle of the night, the whole house wakes up to say how small and insignificant all its inhabitants, including himself: he is already 35, but what did he do in this life? And this theatrical, ostentatious attempt to drown in a shallow river is the clearest illustration of the visual vector in a state of emotional swing.
And again everything will be as usual. Sophia will return to her husband. Misha will entertain a cheerful widow and delight his silly, but such a loving visual Sasha. A pathological inability to change something in this life, to take a step towards realization, in addition to talking about bottle feeding peasant children or distributing tailcoats to the mowers - this is what distinguishes the anal-visual intelligentsia not only at that time, but often now.
Culture should serve society, its task is to overcome hostility between people. That is why it takes a place next to power. The creator of culture is a skin-visual woman - the muse and inspirer of the urethral leader, when she is developed in her natural properties. In this matter, the film has not lost its sharpness and relevance in our days. Only today part of the intelligentsia opposes itself to society through criticism of the authorities.
So as not to live a rough life
The genius of Chekhov and the professionalism of Mikhalkov very accurately showed us that the mental problems and throwing of the heroes of the film are in the absence of realization. Nature abhors emptiness; desires require fulfillment. Hence the feeling of darkness and lack of meaning in life. After all, life is comprehended through pleasure, and a person receives pleasure from the realization of his properties.
And in this matter, Mikhail Vasilyevich Platonov is right, saying that "nothing happens afterwards." We wander in the darkness of our ignorance, making mistakes, unconsciously obeying incomprehensible impulses. As if we are living on a rough draft, hoping to rewrite the book of our life someday. However, this will not happen, the book cannot be rewritten, unless a person understands what drives him, what laws govern him and how they can be used to make his life happier and more fulfilling.
The film leaves a feeling of hopelessness. Questions have been raised, but the answers are only lightly indicated.
