Part I. "I come from childhood"

In 1921, Antoine learns that a volunteer aviation regiment is being formed in Strasbourg. It is still difficult to say whether he is attracted to aviation, but after much deliberation, he firmly believes that architecture is not for him. De Saint-Exupery went to Alsace, which, according to the Treaty of Versailles, went to the French. Enrolling in a flight regiment was tantamount to a leap into the unknown.

Private de Saint-Exupery was enlisted in the non-flying composition. On the fuselages of aircraft that participated in the First World War, and then found their "home port" near Strasbourg, there were images of storks - the symbol of Alsace. It is clear that no one was going to teach the young replenishment to fly, neither on the "storks" fanned with military glory, nor on the "whatnot". Antoine was sent to repair shops.

The deal with the engagement was agreed upon, when suddenly during one of the training flights his plane, barely picking up speed and taking off from the ground, fell to the ground. Saint Ex was seriously injured. The bride's parents put Tonio before a choice: "Family happiness or a dangerous profession."

Social transformation in a revolutionary way is not a discipline that could attract Antoine's attention. Much more important, he considered the relationship between people. De Saint-Exupery did not divide humanity into races and nationalities. He equally helped a Frenchman captured by the Moors or a Spaniard wounded by the Republicans. He could use his savings to ransom a poor Moroccan from slavery from African slave traders, loan him money and let him go home.

He is more attracted to people "tightly connected with life, with the need to eat, feed their children and hold out until the next paycheck …"

De Saint-Exupery went up to the position of sales clerk. But he only managed to sell one truck. Soon he receives an offer to go to Toulouse and start work as a mail pilot.

Europe was still alive with war and revolutions, and some far-sighted entrepreneurs were already thinking about using military aircraft for peaceful purposes. They were treated like crazy, but their confidence attracted those who, after the end of the war, threatened to be left behind.

This primarily concerned pilots and aircraft mechanics. It was decided to use the craft they acquired for the peaceful development of airspace. This is how the idea of creating "Air Lines" was born, which would deliver mail from one continent to another. At its origins were the same urethral sounds as de Saint-Exupery, looking into the future and bringing it closer.

The pilot took all responsibility for the transportation of mail. If the plane's engine failed, the fuel supply stopped, then the pilot was in a hurry to deliver bags of mail to the nearest railway station. She was rescued from sinking planes, for which a narrow edge of the beach was enough for a takeoff run.

At Air Lines, de Saint-Exupery again starts in the workshops with repairing engines, with lessons in meteorology and navigation. He tests refurbished aircraft, waits for his turn to fly over the Pyrenees, plow through fogs and snowstorms.
