They were polyglots, highly educated people who, after graduating from a higher educational institution, performed a high social role in society. But she was not an end in itself. They simply followed their natural desire to know the world, it determined the scenario of their life.
In the anal phase of the development of society in our collectivist mentality, even sound scientists, who are usually closed in themselves and acutely feel their individuality and intellectual superiority over others, did not oppose themselves to others, but felt like a part of society and developed science for the benefit of the whole country in order to bring their activities benefit others, make the life of the whole society better, move forward progress.
