Marina Tsvetaeva
"Union of return" trapped
The short-sighted S. Efron falls into the trap of the olfactory Soviet intelligence. He strives back to the USSR, taking his family along with him. Marina is against - returning to the past is impossible. Realizing the responsibility for those close to her, Tsvetaeva follows her daughter and her husband who fled from the police to the Soviet Union. In a completely alien environment, Marina finally turns into a hunted lone wolf. Loneliness, intolerable in the urethra, is intensified by the absolute impossibility of sound concentration. Marina is trying to save her arrested husband and daughter.

At the end of 1928, a split began among Eurasianism. Unwittingly, Marina played an indirect role in this. In the first issue of the newspaper "Eurasia", the long-awaited print organ of the movement, its "Appeal" appears in support of Mayakovsky's work. Critics unequivocally regard this as support for red Russia. The left wing of Eurasianism, which included S. Efron, began a rapid rapprochement with the USSR. The Union for Homecoming, whose role is to facilitate the return of Russian emigrants to the USSR, is becoming more and more active. Sergei Efron is a prominent, if not the main, figure of the "Union of Return".
It is now clear that both the split of Eurasianism and the "Union of Return" were the affair of the GPU. Such a naive and short-sighted person like Efron was a tasty prey for the olfactory Soviet scouts: he rushed to the Stalinist "forest plantation", not making out the road, dragging along if not all, then part of the White Guard undead flock. The olfactory cleaners of the new Russia destroyed the ideas of Eurasianism that were unnecessary for the country at that time, both right and left, but the main blow was directed at the reactionary part of the former White Guards, who could pose a serious threat to the USSR - fascism in Europe was already rearing its head.
In 1931, S. Efron, to the horror of Marina, applied for a Soviet passport. Alya, who was going through a difficult period of growing up, was infected with his idea of returning. Even little Moore dreamed only of the great and beautiful country of the USSR. It is impossible to say that there was no reliable information from Soviet Russia - the information reached. Those who had eyes and ears had a clear idea of what was happening in the Soviet Union: the famine in Ukraine, the expulsion of the peasants to Siberia, the murder of Kirov. Sergei Efron did not belong to those who can read between the lines, it seems that he is under the hypnosis of Soviet propaganda, he saw and understood only what was suggested to him - Chelyuskin, collective farms, new life!
The "Union of Return" was competently camouflaged as a cultural organization: meetings, seminars, exhibitions of Russian artists who lived in France were held there, a theater studio worked, and chess tournaments were held. Luring these shortages in sight and sound of people cut off from Russian culture, the skin-olfactory Soviet intelligence achieved the incredible: the "returnees" signed up for Soviet loans, collected money for the construction of Soviet aircraft. In 1935, three thousand francs were collected and sent to the USSR in this way - a substantial sum for the impoverished emigrants.
Sergei Efron was recruited in 1932. Recruiters took advantage of his sense of duty towards Russia and his utter inability to take a sober view of what was going on. I must say that there were many such obsessed with nostalgia, among them people are very developed, intelligent, but they were also convinced by Soviet oral propaganda, pronouncing the olfactory meanings necessary for the Soviet flock. The films "Chapaev", "Merry Guys", "Seven Brave", "Launch to Life" were widely demonstrated. People were convinced: life is boiling in the USSR, “the country is rising with glory to meet the day,” here in Europe, the miserable vegetation of strangers without a future.
S. Efron enthusiastically gives himself up to work in the "Union", he takes part in the Spanish events, but not firing from the trenches, like K. Rodzevich, but in a more interesting job. In the NKVD group in Spain, he identifies the "Trotskyists" on Spanish territory. Fascinated by the change of pictures around, completely surrendering to the seething activity, Efron does not notice how he ceases to be the master of his fate. In Paris, he is already fully involved in organizing the surveillance of people objectionable to the NKVD.
Sergei Yakovlevich is rapidly advancing in his service, his financial situation is improving, his work is well paid, but the main reward for selfless work is permission to enter the USSR for his daughter Ariadne. Finally, a long-forgotten filling of true vector deficiencies! It seems to Efron that he is very close to complete and final victory, he just needs to make a little more effort - he has no doubts about success.
One of the residents of Soviet intelligence in France, Ignatius Reiss (aka Poretsky, aka Eberhardt) ceases to satisfy his masters. The decision to eliminate Reiss has already been made at the Lubyanka. There is little to do: carry out the murder. Efron is being used blindly. His task is to lure Reiss into a death trap. And Efron succeeds: Reiss is killed. SURTE is looking for murderers, Efron escapes from Paris, if it dawns on him where he is in trouble, it’s too late, the only way out is a swift departure to the USSR. The last hope of skin-blind victims is quick legs. But where are they going? Into the most important, deadly trap.
I would like to die, but I have to live for Moore; Ale and Sergei don't need me anymore … (M. Ts.)
Sergei's escape broke Marina, she immediately grew old and withered. Mark Slonim, a friend of their family, writes that he saw Marina crying for the first time these days: "I was shocked by her tears and the absence of complaints about her fate." Sound voids, where Tsvetaeva plunges deeper and deeper, for lack of filling with verses, begin to devour her body. This can often be observed in people with a similar mental organization. The sound engineer does not remember whether he ate or slept. The urethra needs a minimum. Falling into the void of sound, such a person completely encapsulates from external life, from the outside such a state looks like madness.
Nevertheless, Marina stands stoically for hours of interrogation by the police. "What do you know about your husband's political activities?" This question is repeated over and over again in different interpretations. Answering questions, Marina repeats one thing: her husband is innocent, he sympathized with the Soviets, but in any dirty deeds he categorically could not be involved. She reads Pushkin to the police in French. Realizing that Marina is completely insane, they let her go.
Life in France is becoming unbearable for Tsvetaeva. It is clear to everyone around: Efron is a Soviet spy, his wife is an accomplice. Marina is not just lonely, she is an outcast, she is not published, she is deprived of her Czech allowance.
In 1939, the Nazis occupy Czechoslovakia. Marina's answer is a cycle of poems “Towards the Czech Republic”. Tsvetaeva's lines sound like a prophecy:
Oh mania! Oh mummy
Greatness!
You burn
Germany!
Madness, Madness
You create!
In the same year, Marina and her son left for the Soviet Union. Unlike her husband and daughter, Tsvetaeva had a great idea of where she was going, and she had no illusions. She needed to be close to Sergei and the children - this is how she understood responsibility. The monstrous reality has surpassed the darkest predictions.
Overtone - untertone of everything - horror … (M. Ts.)
The family of the NKVD officer S. Ya. Efron has been assigned a part of the house in Bolshev, near Moscow. The other half is occupied by the family of a close friend and colleague Sergei N. A. Klepinin. Having barely crossed the threshold of the house, Marina learns about the arrest of Asya's sister and her son Andrei. Efron's associate in Eurasianism, a friend of Marina, Prince. Svyatopolk-Mirsky, who returned to Russia from Paris two years earlier.
Marina is turning to stone, but she is still trying to live in Bolshev's new communal reality. Parquet floors in the house do not exclude "amenities on the street", the kitchen and living room are shared with neighbors, Marina is almost never alone. There is no question of poetry. Constantly someone pushes next to a kerosene stove or a bucket. Marina barely has time to write down scraps of phrases where the key word is "disliked."
And this is just the beginning. The series of arrests continues. They take people whom Sergei Efron knew from Paris, whom he himself agitated to go! There is no information about the fate of those arrested. Efron's attempts to plead for them do not lead to anything, he realizes his complete insignificance and powerlessness to fix anything, he is in despair.
According to eyewitnesses, Tsvetaeva was completely depressed these days, the complete absence of a visible reaction to external events alternated with sudden outbursts of anger for seemingly insignificant reasons. For example, she flew screaming out of the room when a neighbor dropped a saucepan under the door. Such outbreaks are increasing. Marina realizes: her husband is with those who planted Asya and Andryusha. She is in anger at Sergei, at these Bolshevik neighbors, “newspaper readers”, seized by public fervor, at all this ridiculous surrealistic life with strangers.
Returning to the peculiarities of Tsvetaeva's mental structure, it is not difficult to understand what colossal shortages she experienced in all her vectors. In sound, this is the impossibility of at least a few minutes of silence and loneliness, in vision - the loss of a beloved younger sister and close friends since childhood, compassion for a seriously ill and morally crushed husband. In the urethra - loneliness, a complete lack of communication with their own kind, the awareness of their own powerlessness in the current situation, where all that she can - passively wait for arrest. It's not just scary for a urethral person - to be powerless, it's horror …
Violating the ban on organs, Tsvetaeva still leaves, but not to Moscow, but to Tarusa. She wants to find out the details of the arrest of her sister, who was taken there. Shortly after Marina's return, Ariadne is arrested. It's August. The mother will be able to transmit the first transmission to her only in December; Marina will receive the first and last message from her daughter from the camp in Komi in the spring of 1941. Two months later, Sergei is taken away, and Marina will never get any news from him.
In November, when the Klepinins' neighbors were taken away, Tsvetaeva remains alone with her son in an extinct house. The Klepinins' daughter-in-law, who arrived in Bolshevo, recalls Marina: disheveled gray hair, huge eyes fixed on her thin gray face, she kept repeating only one thing: "Get out of here as soon as possible, baby …" Merzlyakovsky lane, they have nowhere else to live.
If all my comrades consider me a spy, therefore, I am a spy and I will sign their testimony … (from the protocol of interrogation of S. Ya. Efron)
Now, when the archives of the NKVD have been opened, one can at least approximately imagine what happened to the prisoners in the dungeons of the Lubyanka. Miraculously, the survivors testify to what the dry language of the protocols did not reflect: mocking remarks, shouting, "methods of physical influence", night "carousel" interrogations, alternating with the placement of the arrested person in an ice punishment cell. For weeks without sleep, for days on swollen legs without the opportunity to sit down, people completely lost their orientation in space and time. That is the meaning in the correctly recorded words of S. Ya. Efron: “I ask you to interrupt the interrogation, because I don’t feel very well now”.
He got the most. The rest immediately or almost immediately accepted the line of investigation, admitted the absurd accusations, slandered themselves, handed over others. The unfortunate believed that by voluntarily engaging in total lies, they had a chance to survive. Only Sergei Yakovlevich never admitted that he was a "spy of all intelligence services." From interrogation to interrogation, he repeated: "After 1931, I did not conduct any anti-Soviet activity, my comrades are not guilty, they slander themselves." The confrontations, where Klepinin and his wife instructed Efron to admit everything that the investigator says, did not help. Sergei stood his ground.
Created in Marina's dreams, the hero became so in life. He fulfilled his duty to his friends who remained at large, did not harm anyone. Sergei Efron finally realized that no one needed the truth here, that he would not be able to prove something and get out of the trap into which he fell and lured loved ones, but he could not go against what he considered his duty. Sergei tried to commit suicide, was placed in a prison psychiatric hospital and, in the end, was shot. The wife and son did not have time to find out about the execution of the sentence.
The ending.
