Artificial Intelligence. Caution - robots
The laboratory looked like a training ground, everything was turned upside down, as if a flock of monkeys were frolicking here. Coming to his senses and looking around, Ivanov discovered that the robot had disappeared, on which he had been working with a systems psychologist for the last six months Part One: Drug addict
Junior Researcher Ivanov donned a white coat and entered his sparkling laboratory. The picture behind the open door shocked him.
The laboratory looked like a training ground, everything was turned upside down, as if a flock of monkeys were frolicking here. Coming to his senses and looking around, Ivanov discovered that the robot had disappeared, on which he had been working with a systems psychologist for the past six months. Ivanov dialed the director of the institute on the internal number.
The director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (AIII) was stumped. He had to admit that thirty years of research did not lead to the intended result.
Thousands of algorithms have already been tried and hundreds of models of behavior of biorobots of the first, second and third generations have already been tested, but the machine remained a machine. There were, of course, successes - some robots coped very well with their tasks, there were large orders for them, and the industrial department was working with might and main. Nevertheless, the scientific council ruled that the institute did not come close to its main goal - to create a robot capable of independently thinking and improving its thinking. And most importantly, the creative crisis at the institute dragged on, there were no new ideas, it seemed to scientists that they had already tried everything. Various consultants, world-renowned specialists in various fields of science were summoned to the institute, thousands of experiments were carried out, and all was in vain. There was no push, no idea that would set the movement in the right direction. The Institute seemed to be frozen.
The phone rang:
- I'm listening.
- Sergey Sergeich, this is Ivanov. My entire laboratory has been torn apart and the robot has disappeared.
- WHAT?.. In ten minutes to me! For now, see if anything else is missing.
There have never been such cases in the entire history of the Institute. The director dialed the security number on the selector.
- Duty officer, was there anything unusual during the night?
- No, Sergei Sergeevich, everything is quiet here.
- Urgently review the recordings from surveillance cameras around the fifth laboratory, their robot has disappeared.
- Okay.
But judging by the voice, the guard was not doing well. The director recruited the fourth laboratory, analysts worked there, and they usually stayed up late.
- How are you, colleagues?
- Everything is as usual.
- Did anyone work tonight?
- No, we left at ten o'clock yesterday.
- Did you notice something unusual?
- Not. What happened?
- In the fifth, the robot disappeared.
- WHAT?
- So think, WHAT would it mean, and in five minutes everything to me.
Five minutes later, the entire laboratory gathered in the director's office. Everyone was actively exchanging views on the night incident and were very excited.
- So, I see everything in the course. So let's start with Ivanov. Let him tell you what happened last night, before leaving.
Everyone fell silent and turned towards Ivanov. Ivanov was silent for a while, collected his thoughts:
- Masha and I just finished the modification of the third generation robot yesterday. It was getting late and we drove home. In the morning we wanted to start extended testing. But, today … I came, and all the plans to hell … there is no robot, everything is scattered.
The director asked:
- Everything is scattered! What were you looking for? What else was there of value besides the robot?
- The fact of the matter is that we have nothing of value. Computers, bedside tables, wardrobes. Everything is in place, only the contents are lying around the entire laboratory.
- Tell us what kind of modification you made.
Ivanov was somehow embarrassed, sighed and said:
- We taught him to eat sugar.
In the office, everyone was quiet in bewilderment. Everyone knew that the robots did not need any power, they worked on the most powerful batteries and could be charged from the mains themselves if the charge dropped to the minimum threshold.
- Ivanov, explain why the robot is eating sugar? What is this childishness? What are you doing? Why didn't you agree with me on this nonsense?
“You wouldn't let us make such a modification. And Masha, when she was in the circus, came up with the idea to teach the robot to eat sugar in order to train him and give him an incentive to develop his abilities. In the advertisement, we saw a new development of power engineers - a light bulb for tourists, which can be powered by a sugar cube, where some very interesting chemical reaction is taking place. So we attached such a sugar battery to the robot. And they also built in a circuit for him, which constantly causes interference, and if you put sugar there, then the current from the breakdown of sugar extinguishes these interference, and the robot seems to feel better.
- And how did he react to sugar?
- He liked this. He solved simple problems, we fed him sugar.
- So that he does not get bored at night, we put him at a computer with tests. These are tests with fuzzy logic for coming up with algorithms, they are designed for schoolchildren. Robots cannot cope with them, since there is no single algorithm for solving these problems. All tasks differ in the way they are solved, and algorithms for each task need different ones. A simple device was attached to the computer - if you solved the problem, a piece of sugar dropped out.
There was a call from laboratory number 5
- Sergei Sergeevich! This is Masha. Here…
- Masha, urgently check that computer with tests for the robot. See if he solved the problem and call back.
There was a silence in the office. Everyone was waiting for Masha's call.
Suddenly an analyst from Laboratory Six exclaimed:
- And we have gone from the bedside table sugar! In the morning we wanted to drink tea, but there was no sugar, so we had to drink it.
Then Masha called:
- He solved all the problems of the first and second levels! I got stuck on the third, probably because I ran out of sugar in the device. And I also looked: our sugar bowl is empty, he ate everything! And yet, he opened the plan of the institute and studied it.
The picture began to clear up. The robot got a taste, solved the problems and when the sugar ran out, he went to examine all the cabinets and bedside tables in the laboratory, found and emptied the sugar bowl, then somehow left the room and made his way to the sixth laboratory and also deprived them of all sugar. Where he went next is still unknown, but the fact that he left in search of sweets was clear.
- How long does a lump of sugar last for him? the director asked.
- We accelerated the catalysis of sugar to 5 minutes, so he feels good for about 5 minutes, then the interference turns on, and he wants sugar again.
- And where now to look for your sugar addict, Ivanov?
“In our army, food lovers usually stayed closer to the kitchen.
For the first time that day, the director felt that the situation was about to be resolved, he dialed the number of the cafeteria.
- Girls, how are you? What's for lunch today?
- Sergey Sergeyevich, lunch will be as usual. We have, however, a strange problem. All the sugar is gone. But they have already ordered, they will bring it soon.
- Thank you girls!
The director looked around the audience and suggested:
- Shall we go to the dining room? Maybe he's there?
In the dining room, behind boxes of groceries, they found a robot lying serenely on a shelf. There were boxes of sugar around him. The robot threw a cube of sugar into itself every 5 minutes and was happy.
- Let's assume that the experiment was a success. The loss was found, the tasks were solved, our robot found happiness and peace. Now we should think about how to use other senses of robots to develop their intelligence.
End of the first part. To be continued.
